This project was multifaceted and involved supporting UBC in some of the institutional efforts at reconciliation. Our team prepared bi-lingual English and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ wayfinding and storytelling signage to support the gift of the place name, from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam). The name, which translates as “Houses of the Ones Belonging to the Saltwater,” was incorporated on typical UBC exterior signs. Our work was to weave together existing campus wayfinding standards with hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ naming bearing in mind a wide range of audiences: students, visitors, conference attendees, and hotel guests.
An important component of the work was defining means of integrating the Musqueam artwork into the project. We assisted UBC in developing a collaborative approach to working with artist, Kelly Cannell. The project evolved through a collaborative team approach, working closely with developers, architects, and the artist to seamlessly integrate the artwork into three striking glass canopies.
