SFU GOLDCORP CENTRE FOR
THE ARTS
CLIENT: Simon Fraser University
LOCATION: Vancouver, British Columbia
SCOPE: Interior/exterior digital projected and wayfinding signage
Our team was engaged to design both an architectural and wayfinding renovation to the SFU Woodwards location, known as Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. This concept is simple use of brand colour as boldly as possible. The signage extends vertically through all elevator lobbies, addressing temporary signage, washroom signage and directional signage. The work clarifies the relationships between multiple brands and names in the space and provides clean surfaces for display of art, student interaction and a wide variety of events.
One unique feature of the work is the use of digital projected signage for temporary wayfinding and event promotion. Through rigorous testing and evaluation, we developed a system to avoid the use of typical digital monitors, creating clear “red spaces” for directional and art event signage to be projected. The effect is more of a spatial approach, taking advantage of simple light and typography. A simple interface allows the work to be updated easily online and avoids the typical clutter of posters and taped-up temporary signage around film festivals, etc.
Large formate exterior signage was created without the requirement for City sign permitting through the use of simple vinyl on glass spelling out the initials SFU SCA.
