IRVING K BARBER LEARNING CENTRE

This multi-purpose university building is a marriage of a heritage core and two contemporary wings. The wayfinding is a unique challenge in that there are twelve separate entrances to the buildings on two different levels. Further, and from an operational perspective, the entry to the library collections themselves is on the third level, requiring attention-grabbing methods. Our approach was to develop bold typography based on the UBC brand which would stand out in a busy architectural environment.

Client: UBC Library
Location: Vancouver, BC
Scope: Wayfinding strategy, signage design

The graphic system pays homage to the UBC brand and signage guidelines while keeping in mind the existing identity of the Irving K Barber Learning Centre. The project was implemented in two stages, incorporating a temporary testing phase after Design Development in order to assess the success of the system before moving to final tender documents.
